All sorts of decisions have to be made when building a house. When it comes to selecting materials, your decision mainly depends on how fast the project will take to complete with them and the associated costs.
With wood-based materials from SWISS KRONO, you know that your new eco-friendly, healthy home will be ready to occupy fast. Large-format prefabricated wall and ceiling elements made with SWISS KRONO LONGBOARD OSB and SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB let you erect a building in record time. These SWISS KRONO elements can be long enough to make an entire side of the building in one piece, i.e. without any joints. And there are even more benefits: the finished house is airtight, and externally applied thermal insulation eliminates thermal bridges to save energy.
SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB modules are produced indoors year-round, quite independently of the weather. In cooperation with our licensees, complete wall or ceiling panels made to order in accordance with your wishes. You have considerable latitude for designing them, as your creativity isn’t constrained by the need to follow a defined grid. This makes it possible to erect flexibly planned, architecturally sophisticated buildings that last for a hundred years or more. In terms of longevity, they are therefore on a par with other construction materials.
There is a whole palette of possibilities for designing and insulating the exterior walls. SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB also delivers advantages for finishing the inside surfaces: the sanded OSB surfaces can be directly tiled, papered, plastered or coated with practically any product without having to cover them with plasterboard or the like first.
If you cover the inside of the exterior walls with SWISS KRONO LONGBOARD OSB you simultaneously create an airtight layer and vapour barrier in your new home. Despite their relatively thin walls, timber houses built with SWISS KRONO products are automatically well-insulated – so well, in fact, that they can comply with passive house or even energy-plus standards. Yet another advantage of the slender exterior walls is more living space than in a conventional masonry building of the same size. The modules are lifted into place, assembled and connected at the construction site. All in all, this makes timber construction with SWISS KRONO an exceedingly efficient, cost-effective approach.
The materials used for a building are what largely determine whether or not it has a good indoor climate. Engineered wood products are often accused of containing too much formaldehyde, which is detrimental to the health. SWISS KRONO therefore makes a point of using only completely formaldehyde-free binders to produce OSB. As a result, the boards contain only the tiny amounts of formaldehyde which are bound up in natural wood. Their formaldehyde emissions have been measured at below 0.01 ppm, or well under the ceiling of 0.1 established by the E1 directive. This value is also less than the concentrations that are found in the air of some cities and considered to be normal.
