Promotion of Timber Construction by Germany’s States

In addition to the nationwide possibilities for obtaining support from the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) and municipalities for building both residential and non-residential structures, some German states also grant special subsidies or other assistance for building with wood. Many of them have also already adjusted their building codes to facilitate the use of timber and engineered wood materials.

BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG

The Baden-Württemberg Timber Construction Initiative (Holzbau-Offensive) has launched the Holz Innovativ Programm (Innovative Timber Programme) to support innovative timber construction projects.

The Tourismusinfrastrukturprogramm 2023 (2023 Tourism Infrastructure Programme) is supporting municipal facilities which are primarily used by or for tourists. Projects in which predominantly environmentally valuable materials such as wood are used for structural and other essential components receive an extra bonus of 5%.

BERLIN

The Berlin baut mit Holz (Berlin is building with wood) programme is subsidising every kilogram of wood used to erect buildings with between 0.30 and 0.80 euros up to a maximum of 200,000 euros per construction project.

HAMBURG

IFB Hamburg (Hamburg Investment and Promotional Bank) is subsidising every kilogram of wood which is used in the construction of residential and non-residential buildings with 90 euro cents. This covers new structures, vertical extensions and annexes.

To qualify, a project must be checked by an authorised timber construction quality monitoring agency (QS-H). 50% of its fee up to 10,000 euros per building can also be subsidised.
