Conserving resources

In connection with building with wood, resource conservation mainly involves responsibly using this natural resource while minimising energy consumption.

Wood: a Renewable Natural Resource

Every five seconds, enough new wood grows in Germany alone to build a single-family house. As long as care is taken to avoid using more wood that can grow back, a natural equilibrium will continue to operate.
At SWISS KRONO we make our products using mainly wood from sustainably managed German forests, most of which are located nearby. All SWISS KRONO OSB products are therefore PEFCTM-endorsed. SWISS KRONO also explicitly supports cascading, or sequential, use of wood. The most important aspect is ensuring that wood isn’t burnt to obtain heat until the end of its lifecycle, after it has been used for other purposes. Chopping down trees in order to burn their wood in stoves right away is a wasteful use of resources and most definitely not sustainable.

Conscientious Use of Energy

Considerably less fossil energy is required to make engineered wood products than steel, concrete or plastics. Despite this, SWISS KRONO Germany has gone a step further by also implementing a certified energy management system in compliance with DIN EN ISO 50001, in other words a whole bundle of measures to additionally conserve energy. This includes, for example, converting construction waste such as sanding dust and wood chips into electric power in a special facility. An innovative system even captures the waste heat of this biomass-fuelled cogeneration plant so it can also be put to use. In addition, the drums that dry the strands for OSB boards are heated using wood scrap from production. These practices let us greatly reduce our consumption of natural gas and thus slash carbon dioxide emissions.
