BE.SAFE FAQs

What is the difference between antimicrobial and antibacterial?
Antimicrobial technologies are effective against bacteria and strains of viruses. In comparison to antibacterial agents, antimicrobial substances offer a higher level of protection. Thanks to their broad-spectrum effect, they are ideal for use in sensitive areas where greater precautions must be taken with hygiene, e.g. in schools, hospitals, hotels, restaurants.

How does our innovative BE.SAFE surface actively combat viruses / bacteria or prevent their reproduction?
The antibacterial effect is achieved solely by the thermoset-cured melamine surface. The additional antiviral property is achieved by including an additive when impregnating the paper. The virucidal additive remains in the surface and physically reacts with the envelope or capsid of the virus and inactivates it, so that the infectivity of viruses is reduced or completely eliminated.

What is the difference to other additives on the market?
In contrast to other additives, which have a chemical effect on microorganisms, the effect of BE.SAFE is permanently integrated into the product. This means that the active ingredient is not consumed, making it more sustainable and efficient.

How long does the antiviral property / function last? (long-term experience)
The antimicrobial activity is maintained throughout the product’s life cycle; long-term tests are in progress. General household cleaning on a regular basis is sufficient for maintaining the antimicrobial activity. The certified antimicrobial surface property is independent of the decor, structure or base panel.

What are the intervals for cleaning and disinfection? What advantages does the BE.SAFE surface offer?
The antimicrobial property does not replace cleaning or the prescribed disinfection of the surface (e.g. in sensitive locations such as hospitals). Without regular cleaning, dirt and possible film-forming cleaners / polishes could inhibit the antimicrobial property. Common household cleaners or disinfectants (e.g. products containing alcohol) are well tolerated as long as they do not contain any scouring agents, acids or strong alkaline substances. BE.SAFE is an additional function that provides more safety between routine disinfections.

How long do viruses / bacteria survive on BE.SAFE surfaces as compared to normal melamine resin surfaces or as compared to other surfaces such as glass, metal, wood, etc.?
Melamine resin surfaces coated with BE.SAFE kill 99.99% of microbes within 24 hours. On uncoated surfaces, viruses and bacteria can remain viable for up to several days.

Has the active effectiveness of BE.SAFE been tested and are there any certificates?
The antimicrobial activity has been tested according to ISO 22196 and certified by the Hohenstein Institute, an independent, external testing institute. Certificates are available on the SWISS KRONO website.

Are there any colour deviations visible with BE.SAFE?
No, the active ingredient is invisible. The look and feel remain unchanged. The active ingredient also does not release any unwanted emissions.

Are any special protective measures necessary when processing BE.SAFE products?
No, because the proportion is very low and the innovative additive is firmly integrated into the surface. General protective measures should be taken when processing.
