SAFETY ON THE HIGH SEAS

When it comes to the equipment of seagoing ships, the emphasis is on ensuring the highest level of safety. Almost every piece of equipment plays a key role. Therefore, the materials used should:

  • have the required certification that the product is suitable for use in the marine industry,
  • have adequate functionality, durability and stability,
  • not be damaged under adverse environmental conditions (e.g. humidity, fluctuating temperatures, UV radiation or salt water).

This is why it is so important to choose the right materials, whether for assembly on small yachts or on ships carrying hundreds of passengers.

THE STEERING WHEEL – A PRODUCT PASSPORT FOR ENTERING THE MARITIME SECTOR

SWISS KRONO HPL IMO laminates meet the requirements of Directive 2014/90/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 July 2014 on the conformity of marine equipment with the provisions of the relevant IMO (International Maritime Organization) resolutions, and are MED-B and MED-D certified. Marine Equipment Directive (MED) is an EU directive that sets out requirements for products used on EU ships, with the aim of enhancing maritime safety and preventing marine pollution.

Products that meet the above requirements and have been certified must be labelled, which is why SWISS KRONO uses the HPL IMO product label with the steering wheel symbol. This label demonstrates the product's compliance with marine equipment regulations, and entitles it to be used on EU-based seagoing ships.

SWISS KRONO HPL IMO - DECORATIVE MATERIAL FOR SHIP INTERIORS

SWISS KRONO HPL IMO is a material for use in the decorative sector in ship interiors, especially as cladding for bulkheads, walls and ceilings, with the exception of pipe and cable sheathing. The material is not intended for floor coverings. HPL IMO laminate is an excellent solution as a surface material with low flame spread, and does not produce excessive amounts of smoke or toxic products during a fire. Composite elements made from IMO HPL laminates and non-combustible substrates have a wide range of applications and are often required in places with increased fire response requirements.

Antibacterial properties

All SWISS KRONO HPL laminates have antibacterial properties. Such properties mean that bacteria do not grow on their surfaces. Antibacterial activity tests have been performed in accordance with ISO 22196:2011 against two bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli), and their results confirm that the HPL surface inhibits the growth of microorganisms.

Maintenance

SWISS KRONO HPL IMO should be cleaned with a damp, soft cloth or sponge, with commercially available cleaning agents, such as a solution of dishwashing liquid. After washing with ordinary cleaning products, the laminate should be washed with clean water and wiped dry to obtain a smooth surface without streaks. Before using any cleaner, read the attached description to make sure it is suitable for that type of surface. Do not use cleaners that contain aggressive or corrosive substances or agents that contain abrasive or glossy additives, as they may permanently damage the surface of the laminate. Larger dirt, such as from a marker, nicotine, nail polish or shoe polish, should be removed with spirit or an organic solvent (such as acetone), and then the laminate surface should be washed with clean water and wiped dry. SWISS KRONO HPL is resistant to most substances that can cause stains, such as milk, tea, coffee, wine, syrups. Despite such high performance of HPL, it is recommended to remove residues of the mentioned products from the surface.
