In January 2023, a Wood Innovation Day was held for the first time at SWISS KRONO in the new Design Station in Wittstock/Dosse. At the event, which we initiated together with the Potsdam entrepreneur Ulf Leonhard, international start-ups presented their project and product ideas live on site and online and inspired the 120 or so guests. For the diversity of the start-ups was enormous: from the developer of solar-powered smoke detectors to prevent forest fires to numerous different approaches for new recycling raw materials to networks for climate protection. The start-ups' presentations were underpinned by keynote speeches on environmental and climate protection by international experts.
Think tank for the future
The event proved to be a think tank for the future and served as a stage for the establishment of new networks. "That is exactly our idea for this event," emphasises SWISS KRONO Managing Director Hendrik Hecht. "As a company, we are always working on new product developments. Events like this also provide impulses for us and serve to ensure that we always think outside the box. After all, we share the idea of the circular economy and sustainability with all start-ups!" Max von Tippelskirch, Member of the Board of Directors of the SWISS KRONO Group, was also impressed by the start-up ideas: "If we were to add up here today at the end of the event the amounts of CO2 that could be saved by realising the projects, it would be extremely impressive!
Pupils among the participants
In order to get young people from the region around the plant in Heiligengrabe interested in the wood industry, SWISS KRONO also used the Wood Innovation Day to invite some school classes to take part. The invitation was accepted by the English advanced course of the Goethe-Gymnasiums in Pritzwalk, the Polthier-Oberschule from Wittstock and future forestry specialists of the Waldarbeitsschule in Kunsterspring.

The participants of the Wood Innovation Day were enthusiastic about the event and the impulses that were generated here. "I can spontaneously think of many more actors in the state of Brandenburg alone who could contribute to such an event and who would be interested in participating, such as universities or private forest owners," says Dr. Jan Engel from the Brandenburg State Forestry Office. SWISS KRONO Managing Director Hendrik Hecht's assessment of the premiere event supports the forestry expert's assessment: "We clearly noticed the potential of this event format. In addition to the 120 guests on site, more than 300 users also used the live stream. It's worth staying tuned here!"
